Homework

Homework reinforces what is learned at school and helps to instill good work habits. Assignments are reviewed in class, which means students should always know what they need to do on  their assignments when working on them at home.  However, if an assignment comes home and your child is confused and you are not sure how the assignment is to be completed simply write me a note and I will help your child complete the assignment at school.  There are occasionally those assignments that just do not make sense even when we have had a lesson at school.

Also, if you have an evening that is very busy and your child is not able to complete his/her homework just send a note to school and your child may complete the homework the next evening.

Children should work on homework for no more than 30 minutes each night, Monday through Thursday.
Monday: Spelling practice
Tuesday: Reading, Math or Writing
Wednesday: Reading, Math or Writing
Thursday: Reading, Math or Writing
Friday: Return Reading Book Bags, Be Ready for our Spelling Test

Our class does not have homework on weekends, so that students have time to spend with family and friends.

If you feel that your child is spending too much or too little time on their assignments, please let me know so I can work with your child toward a solution.

Writing

Here is a bit of  information regarding our writing expectations and how to best help your child.

As we begin the year, first grade students are working to write one complete sentence independently on each writing assignment.  Your child can always do more than one sentence if he/she chooses to do so.   As the weeks progress we are going to be working on making sure we have nouns, verbs, and adjectives in our sentences.  We will also learn about pronouns and prepositional phrases.  The writing expectation moves from one sentence to three sentences toward the end of October, and by the spring time, we are expecting five sentence paragraphs when we write at school, and at least three sentences on homework assignments.

We use "Try Cards" in class when a student is trying to spell a word that he/she is not sure how to spell.  We have the student try the word that he/she is having difficulty spelling on a scrap piece of paper and then an adult helps the student with the accurate spelling.  You may want to try this at home to help with the spelling of unfamiliar words.
